Hofstatter
South of the Alps in
Sudtirol, the Adige makes its way through lush green
valleys and majestic mountains. On both sides of the river vins are
planted on the steep hillside slopes where the best sites enjoy an
ideal exposition to the south and a mix between cool Alpine
temperatures and warm winds from Lake Garda. The seven main
vineyards of Tenuta J. Hofstatter are located on such slopes,
producing grapes for internationally acclaimed wines including the
incredibly concentrated Gewurztraminer Kolbenhof and the
aristocratic Pinot Nero from the historic Barthenau Vigna S.
Urbano, the first vineyard purchased by Joseph Hofstatter in
1891.
In a region that is dominated by cooperatives producing around two-thirds of its wines, Hofstatter is still a family-owned business. Able to survive through the considerable size of its own vineyards, the sheer quality of winemaker Martin Foradori's wines makes the real difference. Apart from the brilliant Estate wines, the consistency of the extensive and solid Classic range is truly remarkable. The native varieties Schiava, Lagrein and Gewurztraminer play the starring role along with the 'naturalised' Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio and Pinot Nero. www.hofstatter.com
