Basilicata
Situated in the
centre of southern Italy, the sparsely populated Basilicata or
Lucania is a harsh region of rugged, snow-capped mountains
and arid hills. Despite the hostility of the land the regions rural
cuisine is deeply anchored in the tradition of creating wonderful
dishes from basic ingredients, imagination and enthusiasm. Pork,
pasta and hot peperoncino have always been main pillars in
the diet, the latter adding fiery sharpness to virtually every
dish.
It is said the Greeks brought Aglianico vines to Basilicata as early as the 6th century B.C. In the hilly district around the Monte Vulture volcano the grape holds the regions one and only DOC, Aglianico del Vulture. The high altitude of the vineyards brings the beneficial fluctuation between day and night temperatures that allow grapes to develop full flavours while retaining acidity. The resulting dark, fragrant and powerful wines are rated amongst the best of Italy.
