Friuli
In the far north-eastern
corner of Italy - bordering Austria and Slovenia - Friuli-Venezia
Giulia is surrounded by the Alps to the north and the
Adriatic to the south. The much disputed city of Trieste
reminds Italy's neighbours of this strategically important gateway
to the Mediterranean. It therefore doesn't come as a surprise that
the Friulian cuisine is an eclectic mix between Italian and Central
European influences.
Friuli is known for its fresh, delicate and varietal-driven white wines, made in the numerous state-of-the-art wineries. Here the effects of cooling mountain air and warming sea currents allow the grapes to develop rich flavours while retaining crisp acidity. The best terroir is found in the DOC's of Carso, Collio and Collio Orientali del Friuli where limestone soils give a pure and mineral edge to their wines. Tocai Friulano, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Ribolla Gialla and Malvasia Istriana are the main white varieties. Although white wines headline the regions viticultural landscape, Friuli also produces interesting red wines. The native grapes Schioppettino, Pignolo and especially Refosco get increasing international attention where the traditional Bordeaux varieties complement the range with modern styled reds.
