Picollo Ernesto
The southern Piedmontese DOCG of Gavi di Gavi is the stronghold of Cortese, a grape known for its powerful acidity, producing impressively structured wines with a distinctive mineral and lemon-scented character. Some of the best examples come from the Rovereto zone where clay soils retain the water needed by the vines during the hot summer months. The vineyards have an ideal southern exposure that ensures the grapes to attain optimal ripeness.
Rovereto is the place where Lorenzo Picollo founded the family's winery in 1945. Today Lorenzo's son Ernesto is responsible for the winemaking while Ernesto's son Gianlorenzo tends the nine hectares of vineyards. In the recently renovated cantina, equipped with newest temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, Wilmes press and own bottling line, three different Gavi are crafted. The basic Gavi DOCG is made from fruit of a small vineyard near the village of Tassarolo while the single-vineyard crus Rovereto and Rughe are both from the Rovereto zone. Although these wines are very different in style, Ernesto ensures both grape and terroir to express itself to a maximum. http://www.piccoloernesto.com/
