Produttori del Barbaresco
The earliest history of The
Produttori goes back to 1884 when Domizio Cavazza founded the
Cantina Sociali in Barbaresco. This cooperation consisted of
vineyards from nine different owners, realizing Cavazza's
philosophy to recognise various terroirs by bottling them
separately. After closure of the Cantina Sociali during the fascist
regime, the present Produttori del Barbaresco was founded in 1958.
Starting with only nineteen growers, the Produttori now counts no
less than 56 members with a total of 100 hectares of Nebbiolo
vineyards in Barbaresco. Together they account for a production of
around 420,000 bottles a year, more than 20 percent of the DOCG's
production.
In the better vintages around 80 percent of the annual crush is turned into Barbaresco, of which half is released as the extremely good value standard Barbaresco. The balance is split up among the nine Reservas Asili, Rio Sordo, Rabaja, Ovello, Montestefano, Paje, Moccagatta, Montefico and Pora, all according to Cavazza's early ideas of recognizing the different personality's of the various crus. http://www.produttoridelbarbaresco.com/
