Sicilia
Sicily has a long history of
viticulture as the Greek brought Malvasia and Moscato vines to the
island as early as the 5th century B.C. These varieties
still produce wines in various DOC's, notably the sweet
passito from the islands of Lipari and Pantelleria.
Marsala undoubtedly is Sicily's most famous viticultural region,
producing different styles of fortified wines that are on a par
with the best Sherries and Madeiras. With the island's wine
industry quickly modernizing, the importance of still wines on the
international market is growing daily. Nero d'Avola sets the trend
in nearly every DOC although the one around the active Volcano Etna
is a stronghold for the native Nerello Mascalese and Nerello
Cappucio.
