Benanti
In the 2,000-year-old alberello
vineyards around Mount Etna many producers hold on to the ancient
winemaking traditions of the region. The native Nerello Mascalese
and Nerello Cappuccio are the name of the game on the fertile
slopes on the northern and eastern side of this active volcano. At
an altitude between 500m and 1200m the fluctuation between day and
night temperatures ensures the red grapes ripen slowly, building
tannins and generous flavours while retaining acidity. The
resulting wines are elegant and complex with excellent ageing
potential.
Giuseppe Benanti and winemaker Salvo Foti have made Benanti the undisputed leader of the DOC with the separate vinification and bottling of Nerello grapes from different sites. The crus Serra della Contessa and Rovitello are the ultimate expressions. On the higher end of the slope where Nerello often struggles to ripen, the native white grapes Carricante and Minella are grown to craft intense and rich whites including the cru Pietramarina. About 10 years ago Benanti planted experimental vineyards with Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay, mostly used in interesting blends with the native varieties mentioned.
The consistent high quality of the wines has earned Benanti the special award Best Winery of the Year 2007 by Gambero Rosso. http://www.vinicolabenanti.it/
