Etna Rosso DOC Rosso di Verzella

Product by: Benanti

Rosso di Verzella is made from Nerello Mascarese (80%) and Nerello Cappuccio (20%) grapes from 40 years old vines grown on the sandy, mineral rich volcanic soils on the northern side of the Etna in the commune of Castiglione di Sicilia. At an altitude of 750 meters high rainfall, humidity and great temperature changes throughout the day mark the climate, producing long-lived wines of ethereal fragrance, sweet red fruit, firm tannins and elegant mineral acidity.

Younger vines, slightly higher yields and a shorter maturation in barriques set this entry-level wine apart from the more expensive crus: terrific value guaranteed from the stellar 2002 vintage.

Vinification

The late ripening Nerello grapes are usually harvested in the second half of October. After malolactic fermentation the wines mature in barriques for about 8-10 months.

Tasting Note

This ruby red wine shows ethereal and intense aromas of ripe red fruit with notes of sweet vanilla oak. Succulent berries, fresh acidity and a hint of salty minerals shape the well-balanced, refined and persistent palate.

Food Matches

Ideally suited to red meat, Agnello alle Olive (Braised Lamb with Olives) and mature cheese
