Castello di Ama
When in
1972 four Roman families bought the historic Castello di Ama, one
of Italy's greatest estates was born. Current owner Marco Pallanti
committed himself to the project of making magnificent Chianti
Classico when he arrived as the new winemaker ten years later,
aiming to return prestige to a DOCG then overshadowed by the
increasingly popular Super-Tuscans.
Because the hitherto used practise of co-plantation produced fruit of uneven quality, Pallanti's mission started with grafting over vines in the original vineyards that were planted between 1964 and 1978 with Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Malvasia Nero. The results have paid off with the production of an outstanding Chianti Classico and the single-vineyard La Casuccia and Bellavista. All wines are regularly awarded three glasses by Gambero Rosso. Apart from focusing on the traditional Tuscan varieties, Pallanti has always experimented with different varieties including Chardonnay, Pinot Nero and Merlot. The mono-varietal L'Apparita is crafted from the latter, immediately receiving cult status since its first release.
For the consistent excellence of his wines Marco Pallanti has been awarded Winemaker of the Year in 2003 by Gambero Rosso. http://www.castellodiama.com/
