Mastrojanni
Compared to other Italian regions
Brunello di Montalcino is a newcomer. Unofficially established
around 1870 by experiments with Sangiovese Grosso or Brunello, the
first legendary wines were produced in the 1880's. A century later
the area still counted only 25 wineries before a surge in
popularity of Brunello caused this number to rise sharply in the
following decades.
Founded in 1975 near Castelnuovo dell'Abate in the southern part of the region, Mastrojanni is a relatively long-established producer whose vineyards are planted on the gravel, sand and limestone soils of the inactive volcano Monte Amiata. The unique soils, combined with an ideal south-eastern exposition and warm summer weather, produce grapes that lend power and structure to the wines made by Andrea Marchetti and consultant Maurizio Castelli.
Mastrojanni's flagships are the standard and reserve Brunello di Montalcino, both characterized by an exquisite balance between extractive weight, powerful tannins and refreshing acidity. Where these exceptional wines are destined for the long haul, the Rosso di Montalcino is build for immediate enjoyment with less time in respectively oak and bottle. The range is further complemented by a Super-Tuscan called San Pio, a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Sangiovese Grosso. http://www.mastrojanni.com/
